چکیده
This paper is associated with an invited presentation at the Mini-Symposium entitled Novel Technology Platforms for Improved Surgical Intervention & Guidance at the 36th Annual International Conference of the IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society. The presentation provides an overview of recent advances in the theory and application of concentric tube robots with emphasis on their use as teleoperated manipulators in surgical applications.

[History of robotics: from archytas of tarentum until Da Vinci robot. (Part II)].
Robotic surgery is a reality. In order to to understand how new robots work is interesting to know the history of ancient (see part i) and modern robotics. The desire to design automatic machines imitating humans continued for more than 4000 years. Archytas of Tarentum (at around 400 a.C.), Heron of Alexandria, Hsieh-Fec, Al-Jazari, Bacon, Turriano, Leonardo da Vinci, Vaucanson o von Kempelen w...
متن کاملPrecision in robotic rectal surgery using the da Vinci Xi system and integrated table motion, a technical note.
Robotic rectal surgery is becoming increasingly more popular among colorectal surgeons. However, time spent on robotic platform docking, arm clashing and undocking of the platform during the procedure are factors that surgeons often find cumbersome and time consuming. The newest surgical platform, the da Vinci Xi, coupled with integrated table motion can help to overcome these problems. This te...
متن کاملTorsional Dynamics and Rotational Estimation of Tip-steerable Needles
In this dissertation, we present improvements to modeling of tip-steerable needles and new estimation techniques with applications to tip-steerable needles. Previous models of tip-steerable needles assumed the angles and velocities at the tip and base of the needle were equivalent. Such assumptions were simplifying, but not accurate. Additionally, to accurately control the trajectories of tip-s...

Epilepsy is a debilitating, potentially fatal, seizure-causing neurological disorder that will affect approximately 1% of people worldwide in their lifetimes [1]. Medication-based treatment is ineffective for an estimated 40% of epilepsy patients [1]. As an alternative to medication, surgical removal of the hippocampus (commonly, the origin of epileptic seizures) successfully cures epileptic se...
متن کاملThe First Korean Experience of Telemanipulative Robot-Assisted Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy Using the da Vinci System
With the advancement of laparoscopic instruments and computer sciences, complex surgical procedures are expected to be safely performed by robot assisted telemanipulative laparoscopic surgery. The da Vinci system (Intuitive Surgical, Mountain View, CA, USA) became available at the many surgical fields. The wrist like movements of the instrument's tip, as well as 3-dimensional vision, could be e...
